The Austin Beer Run Club Hits Pause

3/17/2020

Dear Beerrunners,

It flat out sucks to have to write this, no way around it. Beginning this week, the Austin Beer Run Club will be suspending its Wednesday night beer runs pending further notice. One thing we've always prided ourselves on is our sense of community, and now it is time to give our best effort toward helping our community by staying home. We have made this decision in concert with management at Better Half and we hope, for many reasons, to get back to beerrunning as soon as possible.

But for now, keep tabs on the evolving situation with the coronavirus, keep tabs on your friends and family (digitally, please!), and keep your happy asses at home. ABRC thanks all of you for your support through the years, or just the past few weeks, and we cannot wait to raise a pint with you soon in celebration of getting back to normal life!

And hey, by then, maybe Hold Out Brewing will be open! Stay safe and stay tuned....

THE AUSTIN BEER RUN CLUB'S NEW HOME

We are thrilled to announce Hold Out Brewing as our new location!
Hold Out Brewing is going to be the new "IT" brewpub in Austin—so it only makes sense they've partnered with the "IT" run club in Austin. Hold Out is located just west of Lamar on 5th Street, sitting next to Better Half Coffee & Cocktails (which they own as well). They are currently set to open by year's end. We'll be running, drinking, eating and hanging out there on Wednesday evenings starting in January 2020.

Hold Out's footprint is amazing! There will be 30 beers on tap with Beer Runners receiving discounted prices. They have ample parking which is crucial for a group our size. Both the summer/spring and the fall/winter run routes are 5k in length with the former being primarily on the hike-and-bike trail. We'll share those and other details with you soon.

Meanwhile, LET'S REJOICE! Austin Beer Run Club has an amazing new home!

End of an era / A new beginning

Hi Beer Runners,

We regret to inform our loyal Beer Runners that our home for the last few years, Uncle Billy's on Barton Springs Road, has now closed. Our Wednesday runs will be postponed temporarily as a result.

We greatly appreciate Uncle Billy's, its management and staff. They've been truly a great host and we've become what we are in large part due to their hospitality and support. An extra BIG thank you to Rick, Richard, Zak, Mike and Sam especially!

Now what? We are in final talks with a new permanent home for the Austin Beer Run Club. We can't wait to share the news with you once it's finalized, which won't be long, we promise. We'll be looking to get started back up early next year. Believe us, it'll be worth the wait. This place will blow your mind!

A brief history: The Austin Beer Run Club started in 2012 at Doc's Backyard on South Congress (which is now condos) with just a handful of friends hanging out, running and having some $2 beers/$1 tacos. We put it on Meetup one day and gained 100 members quicker than any other Meetup in its history! We moved to Uncle Billy's a year or two later and things quickly snowballed. We consistently had over 100 members out every Wednesday. We've since been a featured spread in Runner's World magazine, been in a global advertising campaign, been in the Austin Monthly, the Statesman, Austin Fit Magazine (best of 2015), on TV, the radio, etc., etc. Newcomers to town have found their clique, long-term friendships have formed, romances have blossomed, casual runners have become elite runners, casual beer drinkers have become... well, you get the gist.

A lot of this success is due in large part to Uncle Billy's. We are extremely grateful. THANK YOU!

But, just wait! Things are about to get amp'd up... VERY SOON!

So, enjoy your holidays, try some tasty beers, keep running and we'll be back before you know it... BETTER THAN EVER!

AUSTIN BEER RUN CLUB 3.0 IS COMING!

We'll keep you posted. Stay tuned to our Meetup page, our website (https://www.austinbeerrun.club/) and our social media channels for regular updates.

Cheers,
ABRC Crew

The end of the loyalty program

Author: Chris Bash
We are proud of the fact we've provided the ABRC free on a weekly basis for over 3 years -- since 2012. Given that it is free, we need to ensure things run lean and efficiently. As such we've decided it's best to remove the Austin Beer Run Club loyalty program moving forward. What does that mean for you? It means it's no longer necessary to sign-in each evening. You can just show up and run ... less stress! And to be perfectly honest it's also less stress for the organizers day-in and day-out. Along with our partner Uncle Billy's, we will continue to work hard on your behalf every week to deliver a unique Austin experience with discounted beer and food prices. Also, we'll continue to hold pub runs (next one coming in June) along with a special event sprinkled in from time-to-time. So keep on coming out and keep your ears open!

If you have any questions or concerns, shoot us a message here www.austinbeerrun.club/contact or chat with us any given Wednesday. Thank you for your continued support and we'll see you soon!

by John Liska

Beer Runners,

As many of you know we closed out our loyalty shirt program on March 4th, 2015. However, if you logged 10 beer runs by 3/4/15 and didn't receive a shirt already, you're in luck ... we ordered one for you! Please check to see if your name is on this list. If so, come by on any Wednesday for our weekly beer run to obtain yours. (We will not be mailing shirts out.) You must be present by June 4, 2015 in order to claim your shirt. If you don't pick it up by then we'll sell it to another willing beer runner. A side note: women's shirts are now baby doll cut.

Thanks!

Our new partner: Gritness

9/1/2014

by John Liska

We're very excited to announce a new partnership and a new service for our members: Gritness! We met Tommy (a Gritness co-founder) and Stephanie at Uncle Billy's last week after our run and had a great conversation about their offering. They are a young start-up company based right here in Austin, and their site + apps provide a great way for people to find new groups and athletic activities wherever they live (or work). In their own words:
Gritness
"Gritness was created by athletes who were fed-up with the level of effort required to get people together for a workout. It always started with an e-mail chain, that quickly got off topic, followed by text messages, phone calls, and messenger pigeons. What if we could bring it all together? What if we could make it easy to find people that want to ride as fast as you, run as far as you, and lift as heavy as you? That’s what we built Gritness for."

And Gritness is not just for runners; they have all kinds of activities listed including: yoga, road cycling, mountain biking, swimming, and triathlon.

We encourage everyone to check out their service, sign-up, and find events. It's free! You can start by checking out the ABRC group on Gritness right now.

Beat the heat and stay hydrated!

Stay Hydrated
It's summer in Austin. July is hot. August is hot. September .... still pretty hot. And even though our Wednesday night runs are only about 5k we want to make sure our runners are prepared for the heat, and most importantly are having fun.

Recently I came across this article in Runner's World by Pamela Nisevich Bede, M.S., R.D. that I thought I'd share with our runners. It gives 5 pointers on how to stay hydrated in hot weather.
